I believe that single parents are superheros.
I'm serious. The amount of energy that goes into managing a household with children is insane. It's all day. It's all night. It never stops. To do that on top of being responsible for the economic health of a household is a super-human feat. Now imagine doing that as a mom of special needs kids. Now imagine doing that as a mom of beautiful black children in the white white city of Seattle.
I literally worship at the feet of those who get up every morning and do this hard hard work until they drop. And if you are like me and feel admiration at the very idea of this kind of labor of love I encourage you to enjoy the following images of one such superheroine. Living among us. Every day. Here she is.
A friend of a friend introduced me to Joy and let me just say here, my life is better for it. She's a kind and thoughtful soul. She has more books in her home than I've ever seen in anyone's home and her children are perfectly behaved. Oh! Did I mention that she has FIVE beautiful darling perfect baby children? Why yes she does. And she manages the whole house and her crew with skill, compassion and genuine insight. And I am the luckiest gal in the world because she invited me over to photograph it all.
I showed up on a Sunday morning early and got to watch the house unfold. There was breakfast and hair braiding and clean clothes and showers and dance parties. There was falling down and getting up and crying and laughing and hugging and napping.
These private moments are perfection. They tell the story of love and complaint, sorrow and pure pure JOY.
