How are your school feelings friends?
November is the month where it all gets real I think. That brand new back to school feeling that tided us through September and October has faded. We aren't giddily sharpening pencils and planning outfits anymore. All the Pinterest ideas have been used up or abandoned. We have tried pretending none of this is not real and summer will return if you just close your eyes and chant some magic words and that hasn't worked.
Now it's the grind of it.
The same old same old.
The pb and j and the are any pants clean and oh god please don't forget your backpack again.
I go back and forth between being ok with the humdrum of November and feeling like I'm going to die that we can't run away to spend the weekend at a sunny beach. The one thing keeping me alive and hopeful this year is that we are back at Nature Kids Preschool run by Erika Peterson and The Seattle Parks and Rec Program. As far and I'm concerned it's the best preschool program in the whole city of Seattle. Have you heard me talk about it before? Probly. Because I'm obsessed and when I love something I just cant help preaching it to everyone around me.
Discovery Park is a 534 acre park that used to be a military fort and when the army left it they sold it to the city of Seattle for one dollar. The city initially turned them down but I'm very glad they changed their mind and said yes because I get to live a mile from this wonderous nature preserve. INSIDE the visitors center there lives a PRESCHOOL that is crazy affordable in this city where nothing else is and is also pure play-based magic. The kids hike everyday through a huge nature preserve and gather treasures and make messes and come home tired and well loved. Every dollar I spend there is worth it.
Most of the families at this preschool live in our neighborhood and I love how it makes our big wide city feel intimate and walk-able. I want to give back to the places that invest in me and my kid and documenting the deep joy and pleasure of this hike in discovery park does just that. So scroll down, enjoy these tiny shining faces and also join me in surviving and enjoying the ordinary grind of school days. Before we know it the holidays will be upon us and everything will feel different.
