Why yes, that lead picture is a portrait of my son playing the game of "brush daddy's hair and beard." What? that's not a game you've ever heard of? It's not a game that you thought could bring a tiny human such pure joy? Well....now you know.
The portrait was taken in Lake Quinault Lodge on a September morning that felt a teeny bit like autumn and it was early, ungodly early because children wake up at that hour when they sleep in hotel rooms and while I was still yawning, I grabbed my 35mm and snap snap snap.
This is what vacation-session photography should be. It should be about early mornings and late bedtimes and lawn games and everyone covered in sand. I want to do more vacation sessions in 2018 (January is all about telling the universe my intentions) and I thought I would show you my own so you could get a picture of what it was like.
This shoot probably includes my favorite image of 2017 - this one of my son walking out into an alpine lake with me freaking out behind him and yelling for him to get out immediately because we are headed to four days without a washer or dryer and I don't have enough pairs of clean pants for him to have only spent 5 minutes in this pair before he got it dirty and snapping my lens through entire exchange.
After 9 years of photography I can say clearly that there is no predicting when the best pictures will happen. Maybe when I photograph your family your favorite shot will be taken while you load the kids into the car and they are sleepy and cuddly and smell like salt and sand. Or perhaps your favorite portrait will be the last snap I take on my way out to the car when the session is long done or maybe it will be the first snap when your tiny answers the door super excited. I don't know. Isn't that part of the fun of it all?
Also - I'm totally booking a photographer for my next vacation because I am sick and tired of my vacation photos looking like my husband and son went to a fabulous place with a talented photographer AND MOMMY WASNT THERE.
This next set of photographs is from the Kalaloch Rainforest Beach front camp sites where we stayed a few nights. Now - make your reservations early folks if you want an ocean front property. I think we reserved in March or feb right after the NPS opens. there is also a lodge at Kalaloch if you're like me and your mother in law doesn't want to stay at the campground with you but she does want to go on the trip
